Description

Through the series of lessons children will answer various retrieval questions and consider differences in inference from non-fiction compared to fictional texts, as well as sequencing, summarising and defining key vocabulary relating to specific historical periods. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. And contrary to the typical representation of Tudor England as being a white entity, several hundred Black Tudors have been found in historical records. Adapted from his best-selling adult version, this clearly written balanced evidence-based history book for 12+ concisely charts the forgotten histories of Black people who have inhabited Britain from Roman times right through to the present day. There are also opportunities for linked writing, such as to debate whether the World Wars had a positive or negative effect on integration.

He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester and a regular contributor to the Guardian, Observer, New Statesman and BBC History Magazine. Two thousand years are a lot to get through, and inevitably a number of historical characters don’t make the cut.It ranges from the first Africans to come to Britain to the shameful Windrush scandal, and takes in the industrial revolution, cotton grown on slave plantations and the black soldiers who fought for Britain in the first world war. I certainly feel that everyone can learn from this book, and should do more to learn our FULL history, not just the one that they want us to learn.

Over a thousand years, the Romans left a lasting legacy, and we are still discovering more and more about them. Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! There are a few bits that could have been expanded but that’s inevitable with a summarised view of history. This children’s version of David Olusoga’s account of Black British history is essential reading – not only as an accessible and informative non-fiction read for Upper KS2, but also as a book that I would thoroughly recommend for improving primary teachers’ own historical subject knowledge and especially those with input into their school’s curriculum design. As expressed perfectly by Lavinya Stennett (CEO of the Black Curriculum) in the Afterword, ‘This book is a testimony to the rich experiences of Black people of Britain in different periods of our history, and a reminder of the dearth of Black history in our curriculums. We're taught about the First and Second World War's at primary school in the UK - but the role Black people and POC played is not mentioned ONCE.
