Eventually – we’re talking four or five months later – you’ll start to see roots growing in the moss. It’s time to be excited! They chew through the leaves of plants, leaving holes in between the veins that can make the foliage look like lace. It might actually be kind of pretty if it wasn’t so annoying… You’ll need to ensure that you aggressively weed around the plant when it’s young and keep weeding throughout the plant’s lifecycle. Some gardeners say that feeding the plant with phosphorus aids in the plant’s flowering process, producing the biggest and most colorful flowers.

I love wisteria for the fat buds in spring and the voluptuous scented cascades that follow, but it must be wrangled so as not to overwhelm,’ warns Laura Morton. ‘I often anchor individual vines to a wall to create a tracery in a pattern. This makes it easier to keep under control.’ The tracery will also stand out and look striking in winter. Winter pruning is about shaping and training the Wisteria and preparing for the spring bloom. It’s a heavier prune than the summer prune. If you’re only going to prune your Wisteria once a year, you should do it in winter. Winter is also the time for hard pruning, if needed (more on that below). If you don’t remove some of this new growth, the plant will become overgrown with foliage rather than blossoms. When this moderately vigorous, mauve-blue hybrid was first introduced from New Zealand, it was sold as ‘Amethyst’, but is quite different, with longer racemes (17-21cm) and a faint scent. Wisteria floribunda ‘Lavender Lace’One of the more popular methods for encouraging flowering in your wisteria is to drive a shovel 8 to 10-inches into the ground, at a distance of a foot from the trunk of the vine. If there are a lot of side shoots growing off of the leader, remove some so that the plant will focus on growing the leader. Leave and train the side shoots that you want to become your lateral branches. Drive it 8 to 10 inches into the ground about a foot and a half away from the wisteria’s main trunk to slice into some of the roots. Long panicles of lightly scented pink flowers in late spring or early summer up to approx 60 cm long once established. A popular plant for training along wires or up trellis against a sunny house wall or fence and Wisteria floribunda 'Honbeni' is also extremely attractive when grown through established trees or shrubs. I have found success using the American native form of wisteria ( W. frutescens 'Amethyst Falls'),’ says Connecticut-based landscape-designer Donna Christensen. ‘It is not as aggressive as the Chinese or Japanese forms. The fragrant purple flowers are a bit smaller and slightly tighter. However, I find it to bloom longer, and it is less inclined to take over. I use it where I want a soft sweep of fragrance and color over a mid-size arbor. It also blooms a little later than the Asian forms and sends out fewer runners. I have combined it with Asian varieties on a larger pergola for an extended bloom period, too.’

Leave your young wisteria unpruned until it has covered the wall or garden structure and then begin the regular pruning to encourage flowering. The best way to propagate wisteria is through cuttings taken in summer or by layering branches. Either method will still take about three to four years for blooming. When layering branches, choose a flexible branch and bend it to the ground, placing a few inches (8 cm.) into the soil (with leaf node included). Weight it down to secure in place and allow this to overwinter. By spring it should have enough roots for planting.

Where can you see wisteria?

They’ll chew little tunnels inside a leaf like they’re mining for gold, leaving strange maze-like discoloration on the outside. This is vital for wall-planted shrubs, because they will get little rainfall on their roots. Once the first growing season is over, you don’t have to be so diligent, although regular watering in warm weather produces good growth. Training wisteria

These growths are tumors caused by the bacteria and, I don’t know how to break this to you, but they’re really bad news. Remove seedpods at will or leave a few for winter interest. If you bring any indoors for display/decoration, be aware that the ambient warmth of the home may cause them toexplode. Wisteria is generally pruned twice a year, once in late winter or early spring and once in the middle of summer. Winter pruning should be done while the Wisteria is dormant. If you have harsh winters, wait until the coldest days have passed to do winter pruning. Most gardeners do their winter pruning in January, February, or March. If you're growing wisteria on a wall, strong wires are much more suitable than wooden trellis work which is likely to rot. It's worth investing in a trellis with self-tensioning stainless steel wires and these can be expensive. S3i sell functional, stylish kits. You can also use strong wire and vine ties, although the wire is difficult to tighten once it sags. If you want your Wisteria to grow seed pods, you should not deadhead. Deadheading is really an aesthetic choice with Wisteria and increases your chances of getting a second bloom in summer. Get the full lowdown on deadheading here. When pruning an established but untamed plant, be ruthless. Cut the stem several feet below the desired height; there will be an upsurge of new vegetative (not flowering) shoots in the following spring. Give it space to grow and fullsun.
