My favorites were by Beethoven, Virginia Woolf, Louis Armstrong, Richard Feynman, and Sullivan Ballou. This is such a beautiful book of letters, ranging from funny (a child’s letter to Richard Nixon); to aching (“I shall miss you with passion and wild regret,” said Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor after she ended their (first) marriage. It would make a precious gift and really is quite a beautiful object in its hardback, illustrated A4 state. It's a book to keep handy on a table, where it can be opened and single letters or many letters can be read in comfort and pondered at leisure. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. However, despite their many flavours, I am hopeful that all will captivate you as they have me and whisk you to a point in time far more effectively than the average history book – indeed, I can think of no better way to learn about the past than through the often candid correspondence of those who lived it.

The result is beautifully produced, with photographs and colour facsimiles of much of the correspondence. There are a couple of letters which I have already seen in various other guises but, for the most part, these epistolatory creations shed new light for me on so many different matters.
