About this deal

Blues and yellows and greens are perfectly balanced, while reds are nicely restrained, which is a blessing since many consumer-grade films seem to oversaturate in the reds. It’s developed in standard C-41 chemistry, meaning it can be developed anywhere that film is processed. As easy as it is to purchase the film, it is equally easy to find a lab where you can get the negatives developed and the photos printed. Previously, it was also known as Kodacolor Gold 400, and then Kodak Gold 400 before Kodak settled for Kodak UltraMax.

Instead, I scanned the Kodak UltraMax using the Kodak UltraMax 400 template and the Kodak Gold using the Kodak Gold 200 template. No matter where I’m going, what I’m shooting, or what camera I’m using, I know that when I load a roll of Ultramax I’m going to get as many good photos as my abilities allow. This means that it can cope with all of the most common lighting situations, and is known as a mid-speed film. Nothing that would be considered detracting in paler skin tones, though when used with a small flash, it can be a little strong.

However, I did notice that overexposed images have a slight yellow color cast on them, especially the skin tones. I used CineStill Cs41 “Color Simplified” Two-Bath processing kit and followed the directions for box speed for UltraMax and pushing one stop for Gold. The smaller roll is usually slightly cheaper, but the larger roll is usually more cost-efficient per photo - especially when you take into account the fixed development costs 2. In the right light, Ultramax certainly does an adequate impression of the famous portrait film when the sun is up and we meter properly. I don’t have two of the same 35mm cameras, so I tried to get as close to apples-and-apples as I could. The difference is that M6 will probably hold its value for many years or decades, if not gain in value even still, which is not the case for digital cameras (well, it happens with some, but not on the same scale).

This is a very high quality film that is ideal where the finite qualities of Portra 400 are not required and it offers a considerable cost saving over Portra. Kodak UltraMax 400 is indeed the ultimate consumer-grade film that delivers a hassle-free photo-taking experience. Im definitely a fan of Ektar as well but as much of my shooting is done for camera testing, the economy makes Ultramax a winner.Optimized colour precision technology provides consistently bright, vibrant colours with accurate skin-tone reproduction for natural-looking people pictures. This is even more important for a film camera now that we have been spoiled with the comfort of using digital cameras. I’ve successfully zipped it through the autofocus speed machine that is Nikon’s F4, and painstakingly ratcheted it across the film gate of an old-as-dirt Contax.

The term quickly came to stand for a person who engaged superficially in a number of endeavors, but failed to achieve true mastery of any single skill.Unfortunately, I can’t remember which type of a minilab machine it was or if the people who processed my rolls did anything special.
