About this deal

When you finish a window, you place a single tile from it on the lower portion of your board, then flip it over.

We are trying to complete windows in Sintra, so we’ve moved from Evora to Sintra, but we have stayed in Portugal. Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra is the sequel to the incredibly popular Azul, from the same designer, Michael Kiesling, and the same publisher, Next Move Games. The first time a player takes tiles from the middle, she takes the first player tile along with those she selected. I have tried to play it but didn't understand it at all, you definitely need a logical brain and it's quite fast-paced. If a section of the design is completed, it is scored and then turned over to reveal a different combination of colours.

The introduction of new mechanisms can easily make a game feel bloated, without actually enriching the play experience. Much like Azul, the experience is improved with fantastic components as well as the puzzly gameplay.

As a master artisan, you must use the finest materials to create the summer pavilion while carefully avoiding wasting supplies. If preferred, you may select ALL pieces of ONE colour from the central pool, and the first player to do so also claims the first player marker – but also takes a penalty. I’ve been there and done that, and while it doesn’t alway mean that you will have an awful score, it does make it a lot more difficult to be competitive. The top of the Strip tells you what is on the other side) If I were to then complete the first Pane on the left, I would score 4 points PLUS the 1 point for the Strip with the Yellow Pane. For anyone familiar with Azul, winner of the 2017 Spiel des Jahres award, the tile-drafting mechanic of Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra is instantly recognisable.Created by the world famous game designer, Michael Kiesling, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra challenges players to compete by carefully selecting glass panes to complete their windows while being careful not to damage or waste supplies in the process. If a player does not wish to draft tiles, she may instead move her glazier back to the leftmost column. The first time a column is completed, one of its tiles is moved to the lower section of the tableau, causing the column to be flipped to its other side.

Gameplay wise, Sintra does feel to have a bit more depth than Azul, but sometimes I do wonder if that depth is an illusion? With this in mind, it only matters which Pane colors you select to place on your Palace Board when playing the “B” side. The same goes in Sintra, except it seems to have a bit more agency with it, so it feels more punishing.

Since you score the completed Strip and all of the completed Strips to its right, starting with the right Strips and working your way back to the left is a great strategy, but can be tricky because you will be Resting your Glazier more often. You’ll discover that its worth it to take the 6 Magenta Panes even though you only need 4 because in the moment it will score you 14 points while you will only lose up to 6 at the end of the game.

The simple, yet elegant, nature of the Glazier dictating where you can place tiles, and allowing you to essentially “skip” your turn changes the math of the game. Sintra is more interesting for me, because of the intricacies of the scoring rules and the tension between working on the left-most columns (because it’s more efficient) or completing the right-most columns early (because that lets you score them multiple times). I find that the broken glass track is particularly brutal in two player games where it is possible to manoeuvre your opponent into picking up far more Pane Pieces than they can place.

Work together as you travel the globe to treat infections while collecting the cards you need to discover a cure for each disease. With the introduction of the glazier pawn, the columns into which you can place tiles are limited unless you skip a turn to reset the pawn.
