What I find most fun was his story on how he met Natsuki, something that I have wanted to know for a long time! It was so crazy, but yet so Natsuki like how he introduced himself so I just had to laugh. Is so precious, sweet and funny. In writing style, he's passionate yet not overconfident. He 'speaks' well because he's more considerate of his role - a narrator and witness. While he's no expert, he downplays what becomes apparent - his willingness to learn and embrace his new setting. Pizza vending machine attracts crowds in Hiroshima". The Japan Times. 6 September 2018. Archived from the original on 29 August 2019 . Retrieved 13 September 2019.

I Drove to Japan's Most Extreme North | Hokkaido Road Trip, archived from the original on 27 July 2021 , retrieved 27 July 2021My favourite thing about the channel is Chris's dry and sarcastic sense of humour, and that definitely crosses over into this book. I could almost hear his voice as I read along. This would certainly be a good audio book. I really enjoyed this small peek into his life in Japan. The book was so well-written, the story so well-told, that I never wanted the story to end. Your audience is waiting". YouTube. 18 May 2017. Archived from the original on 15 January 2020 . Angeles, Zen (12 December 2022). "Ludwig's Mogul Chessboxing Championship Results and More". ClutchPoints . Retrieved 12 December 2022. I found the book far too easy to put down to rate it higher than 3/5. That being said, should he write another I will undoubtedly buy and read that too. Journey Across Japan: The Lost Islands". Abroad in Japan. Archived from the original on 3 June 2021 . Retrieved 29 May 2021. I gave this one 3/5 stars. For me, that’s a solidly average rating. Chris Broad’s experiences are far from average, I just did not find the book as engaging as I think it could’ve been. I have been watching Chris’ content and listening to his podcast since 2020 and genuinely enjoy what he has come out with.My husband introduced me to the Abroad in Japan YouTube channel a few years ago and we've enjoyed watching all the videos together ever since. When I saw the announcement for this book I was excited to get my hands on it and hear more about Chris' journey from being an English teacher to a highly successful creator. Loved hearing about Chris' journey across Japan. Found it enjoyable to read about his first three years teaching at a high school located in the north of Japan, and his struggles with trying to learn Japanese.

I have watched the Abroad in Japan Youtube channel for many years, and as such was delighted that Chris wrote a book! Broad spoke at a TEDx conference at Tohoku University where he presented about the power of YouTube and encouraged the audience to share their experiences with the world through the platform. [33] Chris has a way with writing that transported me to Japan. He can across as authentic with a good sense of humour. I particularly enjoyed the early years in Japan when he was finding his footing at the school and learning the culture, language, and making connections. The chapter about Kyoto was hard to read. Before the pandemic, the city struggled under the load of more tourists than it could really handle. During the pandemic, it nearly went bankrupt without them. It makes me all the more happy that I was able to go there this year. Kiyomizudera was ridiculously busy, partly due to the sakura season, but apart from that, the amount of tourists wasn’t nearly as high as before the pandemic. And I’m glad to have been able to see the beautiful old townhouses before they become a rarity. It must have been almost eerie to visit the city when tourists were not allowed in. In December 2021, Broad unveiled a new studio that was built by set design company Jiyuro. It is inspired by the 1982 film Blade Runner and 1960s Japanese shopping arcades. [23] On 16 March 2022, the studio was damaged by the 2022 Fukushima earthquake. [24] Documentary work [ edit ]I found this book really interesting with useful advice that will be of use to anyone who plans to live in or visit Japan. Chris does a great job of not sugar coating his experiences, and will highlight the positives and negatives of Japanese culture. Most of all, the book is inspiring. To just get up and go to begin a new life in a foreign land is a brave thing to do. And then to build up a comfortable life there and then leave that behind to follow your dream of making videos could almost be called madness, but he did it, coming out clean on the other end. Follow your dreams! This book is informative, realistic, and highly entertaining. The author, Chris Broad, is happy to embrace the good of the country and culture he immersed himself in, as well as the bad, the problematic and the downright strange! Kakkoii!’ one of them replied, and they both laughed. I had no idea what it meant, so I gave a thumbs-up and hoped they hadn’t just called me a twat.’ The last third of the book takes place after he leaves his teaching role and briefly chronicles the rise of his YouTube channel. For me this was the weakest part of the book. It reads like a series of unconnected anecdotes. While it's not bad, I feel like it's a drop in quality from the excellent first 2/3rds of the book.
