Also, I feel that it deserves a bit of attention as the pattern I see mentioned most from this book is the Solina dress (which was also my first stop), and this is an interesting design too, so here we go! I love the fabric and I love the shape of the blouse and I think they both combined to make this turn out fabulously. The Finnish sewing duo behind the indie pattern label Named, Laura and Saara Huhta help you to build your sewing repertoire and grow in confidence as you further design, alter and modify your makes. Breaking the Pattern is the first authentic dressmaking book that showcases the beauty and uniqueness of Scandinavian style. In addition, PDF patterns of the designs are available to print when you enter some numbers that are in the barcode at the back of the book.

All the patterns come at the back on the book on paper, the pattern pieces do overlap so you’ll need to trace off the projects that you like. I’ve already been thinking about making more of these, but maybe with short sleeves and a skirt that ends at the knee for something more summer-appropriate and casual. It’s a simple, often low cost, low time investment tool for experimenting with a new way of doing things. Patterns come in a range of sizes from US sizes 4 to 16, with concise information of measuring yourself and finding the perfect fit. This is not the actual number of garments you can make with the patterns from this book since you can further mix and match the details between the options presented in the book. Taking a break from a routine or mixing it up can be surprisingly invigorating depending on the behavior, your relationship with it, and what you do instead. I don’t really like having to flip back to instructions for another garment halfway through the process.

The fabric I chose to pair up with this lovely pattern is a soft pink viscose challis with little dabs of black dots. There seems to be a slit in all the patterns, but they’re easy enough to eliminate (not really my thing! Fortunately I have long legs so the length doesn’t look awkward (the patterns are drafted for a 5’8″ woman) and I can picture it looking really cute with sandals in the warmer months.

Simply because I can’t quite think of wearing this to any event (in the pandemic-free future) where I wouldn’t have to eat, drink or visit the bathroom. A lot of the steps actually just tell you to go to another pattern’s instructions and follow a step there.

I decided to do the collar first as I was impatient to see it made up and then I completed the shirt. I ended up packing a nearly all handmade wardrobe for that trip (including garments made last year that I need to blog still) and I think only a couple of ready-to-wear items.Breaking the Pattern is the first authentic dressmaking book that showcases the beauty of Scandinavian style. I love this book and the stylish patterns-I wouldn't say that it's a great book for a beginner but it's got lots of lovely projects for anyone who wants to get into sewing a more tailored wardrobe. Complete with stunning photography, clear illustrations and instructions, this book shows you how to create a coherent capsule wardrobe complete with a collection of 20 garments that are easy to make, wear and combine with each other. Anyway, settle in for some awkward poses and what I think is a rather lovely handmade dress - may I present - The Solina!
